RAW – Refreshing Ayurvedic Wellness


There are plenty of questions that circle around the subject of raw organic juices and cleanses. If its something that’s unheard of to you, do continue to read.  

Although many believe this to be just a fad, the reality is that it isn’t. It is clearly a far more fresh and clean alternative to vegetable and fruit juices, and a safer and healthier alternative to feed and cleanse our bodies.

RAW incorporates 100% organic cold pressed juices made of vegetables, fruit and herbs that are locally sourced and ayurvedic approved. In case you’re wondering as to what ‘cold pressed’ means, it refers to juice that uses a hydraulic press to extract juice from vegetables and fruits. The idea came to her while she was at church, on the first Sunday of the year 2016. When she got back home, she jumped on the bandwagon and began to research on the topic of raw cold pressed juices and was fascinated by what she found.

Unlike most juices available at restaurants and cafes or even sold at grocery stores, cold pressed juices include a much larger percentage of nutrients without the added preservatives, water, sugars or flavours. These juices are far more easier to digest and absorb into the body. Taste was a very important factor when Ronali created them and before you jump into conclusions about how bad it might be, each one tastes refreshing as they include 20 – 30% cold pressed fruit juice and 80% cold pressed vegetables and herbs. In every 350ml jar, the juice concentration is quite high, and they are well balanced in terms of flavour and easy to consume.

To ensure quality and high standard in what she produces, Ronali runs quite the effective eco-friendly and sustainable business from her home – from sourcing only organic vegetables and fruits (also growing a few in her garden), to using solar power to generate energy for cold pressing the juices, to then using the waste as compost and fertilizer in her own garden. Each juice is packed in a reusable and sterilized glass jar and delivered in a reusable cloth bag.

What started out with just three juices to the name has now expanded to a range of 12 juices. Each juice has specific benefits. “It was important to me that before I grew my business, I created awareness regarding how beneficial raw organic juice can be for your mind and body. It’s easy for someone to say we can just add raw vegetables and fruit and herbs to our every day diet but the proper amount (400g of organic produce) that needs to be consumed daily is a bit hard to match, which is why it’s easier when it is in a pressed juice form that has your daily requirement. I initially had stalls at multiple pop ups and was able to sell out in nearly all of them because there were a great many people who were and still are very much interested in healthier and clean lifestyles. I consult an Ayurvedic doctor as well as a natural medicine doctor to ensure each juice combination is balanced and healthy to consume,” she added.

Fresh organic produce of karapincha, gotukola, celery, mukunuwenna, thebu, watermelon, ginger, mango, cucumber, pumpkin and more are delivered every two to three days and Ronali also ensures to visit the farms every couple of months to ensure the highest quality and standards are met. When the orders became more than she herself could handle, she went on to hiring staff to cold press the juices every single morning and also streamlined deliveries that happen twice a day. Orders are taken generally within a 24 hour notice period.

“When it’s your own homegrown business, the job satisfaction is greater. But it doesn’t mean I’ve had it easy either – coming up with a single combination of cold pressed juices can be quite a challenge with limited produce available organic because it’s important to have a balance of health benefits and flavour. I am passionate about what I do and I love every minute of it regardless of the little hiccups along the way. Of course I’d also love to expand in the future and be able to create more raw juices. The dream is to have a proper manufacturing plant so I can streamline the process more thoroughly, able to increase the shelf life of the juices and also to have them be available island wide,” said Ronali.

Traveling on a budget in Sri Lanka


We’ve all been there, we’ve dreamed of picture perfect vacations around the hotspots of the island and being able to experience the beauty of Sri Lanka like a visitor. And then the dream ends as you look at your bank balance and realize, some holidays just aren’t worth it. Hold on! It doesn’t have to be that way. If you can travel on a budget overseas, you can definitely travel on a budget in your own country too. Travelers coming in from other parts of the world do it, and so can you. Here’s how: 

The budget – start with the nitty gritty details of planning a vacation. How much money are you willing to spend and how many days are you planning on traveling? Budgets can vary depending on each individual and unless you’re doing a solo trip, you’re going to have to discuss the ins and outs of budgeting with the friends or family that’s tagging along with you. Not everyone’s budgets or preferences will tally, but everyone will have to compromise somewhere. If you’re really struggling, be firm in your set budget and plan around it.Picking accommodation – one of the first and most important rules of budget traveling is that you need to be flexible and less fussy. It’s going to be a bumpy ride and you know it so have an open mind and be willing to rough it out if you have to. Remember, this isn’t about getting the perfect Instagram worthy photograph or staying at the most luxurious holiday home. Budget traveling is about making memories and having experiences without breaking the bank. So, when it comes to picking out your one or many accommodation stops, be opened minded. Pick out a hostel if you must because it costs a fraction of what you could be paying for a single room at a hotel. You’re set with the basic amenities and most often, also a community kitchen, dining are and if you’re lucky, an outdoor pool. Check out Airbnb for some great places that could work for you.

Mode of transportation – if you don’t have a car, take a look at public modes of transportation. Bus or train are both great ways of having a somewhat different experience altogether and depending on where you’re heading, the scenic view can be quite rewarding too. Take the train ride to Ella for example or even the bus ride to Weligama. Both completely different zones but provide breathtaking views of our beautiful island home. Be mindful of using Tuks in certain areas however and also at times, you might not find any at all. Avoid having to bargain rates as most out of town don’t have meters on them and use the bus to get around, or simply walk if it’s safe to do so.

Packing your essentials – if you’re in a backpacking kind of vacation, be mindful of what you need and what you end up packing. Fancy clothing and gadgets can take a hike. Pack only your essentials and a few extra items of clothing. Remember, you’re traveling on a budget. You may even have to do a bit of walking, so everything you pack should fit into a backpack if that’s what you’re using. Do not go overboard on what you end up taking. If you’re carrying cash on you, have it in a zip case around your waist. Have as much loose change which will come in handy.

Things to do – work around your budget even with some one, or splurge on the excursions if you want to. Some excursions and experiences could come at no cost, like taking a dip in a river or the ocean. Before heading on your vacation, make a list of what do to in the specific area and the cost. If you’re willing to splurge on water kayaking or a hot air balloon ride, go for it!

Where to eat – this could go two ways; if you’re staying at a hostel, you could buy your own groceries and prepare your own meals in the community kitchen. Or you could be the typical local and try out local food joints, or splurge on food during your vacation.

Learning the art of working

It’s normal to go through burnouts. It happens to writers too; ever heard the phrase ‘writer’s block’? That’s when no inspiration hits, and it involves procrastinating. You’re not alone when you feel like all you do is work hard but the payoff doesn’t seem or feel so good either. For the most part, a lot of people feel the same way. However, it’s important to realize that what’s lacking is your approach to your work – you need to work smarter, not harder.

Here are a few tips on how:

– Walk away
Whenever you feel like your workload is too much to bear or too overwhelming to deal with, take a quick break. Don’t just sit there, crowded behind a computer screen and let the feeling of a headache attacking your head get to you. A pile of tasks to complete on a Monday morning isn’t the way anyone wants their day to begin, but it can be done, if you tackle it the right way. Start slowly and by tackling one task at a time. If this continues to overwhelm you, take another break. Its okay to take breaks to refresh and relax your mind in-between getting your work done. Go outside and grab a couple of breaths of fresh air.

– Eliminate distractions
In today’s day and age, it’s easy to fall prey to simple distractions like your phone buzzing with a hundred notifications from the multiple social media apps you’ve downloaded, or the noise around you or even with having a disorganized workspace. If you’ve got some interesting projects and tasks lined up, that need your fullest attention, then it’s about time you eliminate your distractions. Switch your phone to silent mode for a few hours, ask your colleagues to keep it down in a polite manner and get your workspace cleaned up. There’s no harm in having a phone on silent; you can always respond to the notifications when you take a break. Your colleagues need to be supportive of you. And it’s always a good idea to have a clean desk and space so as to not clutter your mind and concentration.

– Create habits
Make habits out of routine things that need to get done and also boost your ability to work smarter. This can differ from industry to industry but the basics are similar. The moment you come in to work in the morning, make sure to check your email and respond to everyone. Task complete! Next, separate what needs to get done right away and what can be done a little later. Thereafter, tackle the immediate tasks. Take your breaks and then come back to finish what’s left to do. Be in the habit of keeping a clean workspace too. Always return missed phone calls. Small habits like these can change the way you work.

– Let someone else do it
Not every one of us would be brave enough to admit it, but sometimes, it’s okay to let someone else do the job if you are unable to. It doesn’t mean you’re any less better than the other person, but its okay to admit defeat when you know you’ve tried. This saves you a lot of time to work on the tasks that you can handle on the other hand.

– Work when you feel motivated
Nobody is going to get any work done by not feeling motivated. If you aren’t passionate about what you’re currently doing, then you need to re-evaluate a few things in your career journey and make a few changes. If you aren’t going into work feeling challenged and motivated, do something about it instead of moping and wading it out for the wrong reasons. You will produce the best of work and your abilities only when you are motivated; don’t ever forget that.

– Spend time outdoors
A change of scenario is always good for the mind and soul. If you’re constantly stuck in an office and around computer screens and people and walls, the occasional break from work and breath of fresh air won’t hurt. How about you take your work outside for an hour or two? It doesn’t hurt to ask, especially if it allows you to work better and smarter. You’ll find that your mind is refreshed and re-energized after 15 minutes of being outdoors. Imagine what it can do, if you spent an hour or two.

– Communicate regularly
Always let your colleagues and even boss know what you’re doing. Keep them up to date on the progress of your day to day tasks, just so that they know the effort you put in is an actuality. It’s easy to be overseen in a sea of people, but be informative and keep your boss in the loop. That way, even if something goes wrong, they’d already know you’ve made your best attempt at making things right.

Black Cat Cafe

  
As random as today was gonna be, my friend called me over to check out this new cafe down the next street. As reluctant as I was, I decided to join her. I’m glad I did. 

Run by a husband and wife, the place also includes a boutique store, a bookstore and b&b! 

The menu at the cafe is very simple but I actually find that this works for these people because they give each item on it their best. I had the salmon on cream cheese sandwich with a soursop and lychee iced tea whilst my friend opted for a homemade ginger beer and portobello chicken and mushroom sandwich. We agreed that although the quantity was on the small side, the flavours and combination of fresh ingredients was really great. We then ordered a turkey and cranberry sauce sandwich which was a first for the both of us. Not my cup of tea but pretty good overall.

You all know I do not apply a ton of makeup on my face – a good kohl kajal or eyeliner, mascara occasionally and a lipstick usually does the trick even if I have dark circles. I ain’t shy to walk around with them. This is just me ladies. Nothing to be ashamed of.

However, I do know that most of you out there love your makeup and have a routine before heading out the door. Here’s something I just came across (a few months late, but who cares right?) while reading online and I thought would be extremely helpful. The article discusses common makeup mistakes women make on a daily basis and I believe I’ve seen some of these mistakes play out on YouTube beauty tutorials.

I actually found it quite helpful because I do not know many things about applying makeup. Did you know that you have to test a new shade of foundation on your neck instead of your cheek? I sure didn’t! And did you know that you shouldn’t be using the same concealer that covers up your dark circles on your pimples? There’s plenty to learn from this one so I hope you all find it helpful 🙂

Still into prints :D

It’s forever summer in Sri Lanka so I’m still in the mood for a ton of prints for the most part of the week whenever I go out. I just love bright colours when I’m in a happy mood (doesn’t everyone?) and I think it really brings out a lot of positive vibes too. What’s featured in this blog post is a top my mum got for me from a trip to India last year. It’s one of my absolute favourites. I believe the fabric is a chiffon and so it’s a bit see-through so I pair this with a black tank underneath. I just love the bold red and the added prints all over it. To be honest, it’s not an easy outfit for me to pair a shawl with because a shawl is a permanent part of my entire outfit. But I try to mix things around and also prints and pair this with similar coloured shawls.

The centre of the top has a different print and that is what is on the sleeves as well. It gives a kind of semi-casual but yet a bit dressy kind of vibe which I really like. I pair this almost always with a grey or dark pair of jeans, nude ballet flats and a printed shawl.

Organization tips! Part 1

I’m a neat freak and this isn’t something new. I’ve always managed to keep my belongings and surroundings neat and tidy at (nearly) all times of my life. I love making sure every object and item has it’s own place so this makes it a lot easier to be organized. I know many of you out there are probably rolling your eyes or would not bother reading the rest of this post but I do believe that it’s important to be organized in order to have a good life. It’s isn’t the most important thing in the world – but, it does help with having a good attitude and positive outlook every single. Messy rooms and areas in your house can create unwanted tension and cause a lot of stress. Keeping things in order therefore will keep your mind happy. So, I’ve decided to round up a few organisational tips – some that I have come across while reading and some of my very own. Hope this helps, and good luck!

1. Keep your scarves and shawls in a separate organisational space – This is something I personally do because my outfit isn’t complete without a scarf (shawl rather). I have mine knotted and hung on the IKEA Komplement Multi Use Hanger. I have two of these and boy aren’t they so handy to have around. They aren’t enough to hang all of my shawls (because I have quite the collection) but I find that for my casual and daily use shawls, it does provide the best kind of organisation space. Arranging them according to colours is also something you could give a try but I just basically hang my shawls wherever there is a free ring. I have a smaller metal multi use hanger (of a similar sort) on which I’ve tied up my husband’s ties. Super handy I tell you!

2. Store your shoes in storage boxes – I’ve a couple of wooden storage boxes from two years back and I find that they are the best way to store all my shoes. Yes I am unable to see what’s inside and that might be a problem to some of you, but so far, it hasn’t been so for me. I have my shoes in two wooden boxes with closed covers and one other with an open top. In the latter, I’ve placed my every day casual sandals, slippers and ballet shoes. Plastic storage boxes are also a great idea because you would be able to see what’s inside no matter where you place them. I’ve placed two of mine at the bottom of the closet and the open top one at the front end of the closet (again, for easy access). Bookshelves are also perfect for storing shoes if you really think about it.

3. Separate your clothing – I’ve separated mine into sections; a casuals section, a semi-casual section, a occasion wear section and so on. This way, I do not need to rummage through a pile of clothes unnecessarily and I know exactly what I need according to the occasion of the moment. It actually makes getting ready seem far more easy. You’ll know exactly where your casual wear, formal wear and party wear is around your closet and wont have to waste too much selecting what you need.

4. Use shower rings or hooks – As weird as this might sound, shower rings can be used for organizing your closet space. Use the rings to hang small items of clothing like shorts and short skirts, tees and even scarves. The same can be done with show hooks. Place them in a corner space of your closet or wardrobe and viola, you have your own multi use hangers!

5. Make use of a laundry bag – Hampers and laundry bags can take up a bit of space, so why not get ones that you can hang on the inner part of your closet door or on the back of your room door? Small hampers or laundry bags can be used to store hats, belts, scarves and other small accessories that you use too.

6. Keep all documents stored safely – I’ve got plenty of personal documents which I keep in multi coloured storage files. I find that this way, I like keeping them organised and I know which file has what type of documents. I’ve got files divided for personal documents like birth certificate copies, marriage certificate copies etc. Another file for all my business invoices, one other for all customer orders, one of some old drawing and poetry (I believe I’ve never mentioned that before on my blog) and another for prayer printouts and so on.

This post is getting a bit too long for my liking so I think I’m going to separate the tips. This would be the first post on organization tips and I will have another, maybe two, posts in the weeks to come, so stay tuned if you happen to like this one 🙂
